Summer Workshop Retreat 2024 | Nina Martin (US)

ReWire Movement States and ensemble Thinking Performance Lab

july 17-21st 2024

DANCE | IMPROVISATION | SOMATICS | RESEARCH | PERFORMANCE | community

Warmly welcome to five days of improvisational dance practice and performance on a small rustic farm home amongst forests, fields and a lake nearby, outside Höör in Sweden.

We invite you to this unique opportunity to dive deep into ReWire Movement States (RMS); a movement practice investigating improvised performance and the phenomenon of spontaneous and unpremeditated movement states. We will also practice Ensemble Thinking; compositional movement scores for improvised dance making (more info below).

Each day includes five hours of dancing, organic and locally sourced breakfast, lunch and dinner, and time for reflecting and connecting. We invite a focused group of 14 artists dedicated to improvisational forms.

The workshop includes a small informal public showing to the community in Höör on Sunday afternoon the 21st.

Nina Martin is a choreographer, pedagogue and dance theorist (PhD) who has worked and studied with artists such as Steve Paxton, Deborah Hay, Simone Forti and Lisa Nelson.

Martin’s research springs from 45 years of embodied inquiry and applied dance centered in the phenomena of perception, technical process, somatics, health, composition and preconscious movement states.

ReWire—Dancing States and Ensemble Thinking are internationally practiced dance systems initially conceived by Nina Martin and further developed with the Lower Left Performance Collective. This research complements her long practice in Contact Improvisation.

ReWire Dancing / Movement States evolved from Martin’s choreographic PhD research, and is a somatic dance and therapeutic movement practice that strives to access preconscious movement states through a body-brain process beneath the control of the mind. Martin’s goal is for improvising artists to gain awareness of “dancing in the gap” between preconscious and conscious states of movement. It is a creative approach to improvised performance and also functions as a therapeutic tool.

ReWire Movement States has demonstrated its usefulness for dance artists and adults living with cerebral palsy.

Ensemble Thinking: Compositional strategies for improvised dance making is a system of collaborative group performance practices using compositional movement scores to refine the individual’s ability to perceive, initiate, and support collective action.

ET’s conceptual nature allows for equality of access regardless of background, aesthetics, or physical capabilities.
